Freestyle Edge RGB Keyboard

Cushioned Palm Support

Quick Start Guide

Your Freestyle Edge RGB is 100% plug-and-play

Simply connect the USB cable to any available full-size port on your Windows, Mac, Linux, or Chrome PC. Your computer will automatically recognize and “install” the keyboard in a matter of seconds.

*For best results, connect the keyboard directly to your PC rather than through a hub, dock, or KVM switch.

SmartSet Key

Get to know the SmartSet Key which is used to unlock all the programming features of the Edge. See the User’s Manual for a list of onboard shortcuts.

Changing Profiles & Lighting

The Edge has 9 customizable Profiles. Each Profile has the same base layout but comes pre-configured with a unique Lighting Effect. Use the shortcut SmartSet + 1-9 to jump to any of Profile, or tap the Profile Key to toggle between Profiles 1-3.

*Profile 1 is indicated by the Left LED, Profile 2 is indicated by the Right LED, and the Profile 3 is indicated by the Left and Right LEDs.

Update Firmware

Kinesis will periodically publish firmware updates with new features and Lighting Expansion Packs for the Edge. Open a text window and run a Status Report (SmartSet + F7) to show keyboard settings and then check here to see if an update is available.

Want to disable all programming commands?

Use the shortcut SmartSet + Shift + L to lock (and unlock) all onboard programming commands to prevent accidental re-programming.

Installing Accessories

Extending the Separation up to 20″

If you need additional separation for shoulder-width typing or want to move the right module further away for more mouse room, the Edge has 10″ of additional cable stored away.

Unplug the keyboard and flip the left module over. Remove the cable compartment cover, thread out as much extra cable as you need, and then refit the cover. Rotate the keyboard as necessary to remove any kinks.

Detaching & Attaching Palm Supports

Detach: Grasp the back edge of the keyboard and gently flex the Palm Support up to disengage the tabs on the underside of the keyboard, and then slide the Palm Support forward.

Attach: Align the three tabs on the front edge of the Palm Support with the slots in the keyboard and gently slide on. If you have trouble, you can flip the keyboard over to ensure proper alignment.

Installing & Adjusting the Lift Kit

Install: Unplug the keyboard and flip it over. Match the lifters to the appropriate key module. Insert the end-tabs on the lifter into the square holes on the back of the keyboard, then lower the lifter until the two squeeze tabs lock securely into place with the Palm Support.

Adjust: Lay the legs flat for 5˚ of tenting, or snap together and swivel in or out for 10˚ or 15˚ respectively.

Installing & Adjusting the V3 Pro Kit

Install: Remove Palm Supports. Unplug the keyboard and flip it over. Match the lifters to the appropriate key module. Insert the end-tabs on the lifter into the square holes on the back of the keyboard, then lower the lifter until front lip snaps into place on the keyboard.

Adjust: Lay the legs flat for 5˚ of tenting, or snap together and swivel in or out for 10˚ or 15˚ respectively.

Installing the 4 Mac Modifier Keycaps

Keycaps: Use the included keycap puller to gently remove the 4 keys to either side of the space bars. From left-to-right, install the small “Alt Option”, “Command”, “Command” and finally the big “Alt Option”.

Programming: Then launch the SmartSet App and choose “Mac Modifiers” from the “Pre-configured Hotkeys” so that the key actions match the new keycaps.

  • Game Bank: 9 programmable keys
  • Fn Layer Key: Hold Fn to access embedded key actions
  • LED Key: Toggle lighting on/off
  • Media Keys: Accessed via Fn key
  • Programming Cluster: Toggle profiles, remap and record macros on the fly, and the SmartSet key
  • Onboard Programming: The SmartSet Key unlocks these 6 shortcuts and more
  • Indicator LEDs: Caps Lock, Game Mode, Scroll Lock, and Fn Layer

Starting to Type

Thanks to its conventional tenkeyless layout, the Freestyle Edge RGB is easy to adapt to and does not require “re-learning” to type. Most new users are up to full-speed in a matter of days, if not sooner.

If this is your first split keyboard, we recommend that you start typing with the modules pushed together. As you get more comfortable, slowly separate and/or rotate the modules to achieve a more neutral wrist angle to reduce ulnar deviation.

If you have the Lift Kit or V3 Pro kit attached, start at the lowest setting and gradually work your way up to the height that feels most natural.

Starting to Play

You can certainly use the Freestyle Edge RGB as a conventional gaming keyboard, but what sets it apart from those basic keyboards is that for mouse-heavy games (eg First-Person Shooters), you can move the right module out of the way for easier rotation and more mousing room, just like a gamepad.

If you find that you still need a key or two from the right module, just use the Remap button to rebind the key action to one of the 9 blank keys the game bank on the left side.

If you have the Lift Kit or V3 Pro kit attached, start at the lowest setting and gradually work your way up to the height that feels most natural.

ALL-NEW RGB SMART SET APP

The all-new RGB SmartSet App offers a GUI alternative to onboard programming your Freestyle Edge RGB keyboard for Windows & Mac.

Unlike the original Edge, the RGB SmartSet App is run from your desktop, not the v-Drive. Download the App, connect the v-Drive to your PC (SmartSet + F8), and then run the App straight from your PC (no installation necessary).

The App doesn’t update in real-time so to preview your changes save the Profile in the App and then use the Refresh shortcut (SmartSet + Profile). When you are done configuring, simply disconnect the v-Drive so the keyboard can resume normal operating mode.
